This Scripture passage begins the closing section to the Sermon on the Mount, and Jesus is drawing the line as clearly as possible between the way that leads to DESTRUCTION (disobeying His words) and the way which leads to LIFE (obeying the will of the Father as revealed in Jesus’ teachings).
Jesus concludes the Sermon on the Mount by giving the disciples, the crowd, and the religious leaders four basic choices and warnings: they MUST choose between two gates and roads (vv. 13–14), two kinds of teachers (vv. 15–20), two kinds of disciples (vv. 21–23), and two foundations (vv. 24–27).
These choices and warnings emphasize the same message: CHOOSE!
Key Verse: Matthew 5:20 (NLT)But I warn you—unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!
Jesus challenged His audience to make a choice, realizing His listener’s choices would have eternal consequences.
They are either WITH Jesus or AGAINST Him. There is no middle ground…
